PACC and GBS Students Earn Awards at ACCA Hong Kong Business Competition

Our students earned the 1st Runner-up Award, Merits Award, and Best Presenter Award at the ACCA Hong Kong Business Competition on 18 February, 2017.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School students earned the 1st Runner-up Award, Merits Award, and Best Presenter Award at the ACCA Hong Kong Business Competition on 18 February, 2017.

Themed “Youth Catalysts in Driving Social Business Excellence” this year, the competition required students to focus on how they can contribute to social welfare through the use of their creativity, expertise and professional knowledge. Each team analysed a case study for one of the three selected social enterprises in real-life, and proposed action plans to optimise its business and operations. The top 20 teams attended a series of skills learning workshops and were coached by professional accountants who are ACCA members.

Two CUHK Business School teams were selected as the top 7 teams to advance into the final round. Finalist teams presented their proposals to the competition’s vetting committee, including representatives from HKCSS-HSBC Social Enterprise Business Centre (SEBC). A team of four year 1 Global Business Studies (GBS) students – Chan Man-yin, Chan Lok-yee, Lam Ting-hei, and Melody Tam Lok-man – received Merits Award, and Melody also took home Best Presenter Award. Coached by Ms. Jenny Hui, a CUHK Professional Accountancy (PACC) alumna and ACCA member, another team of year 2 PACC students – Sandy Chan Ching-yi, Larrisa Lee Shan-shan, Cathy Tsui Ho-yan and Lo Tsz-yan – won the 1st Runner-up Award. This is the second major accounting case competition award obtained by PACC students in 2016-17, in addition to the championship awarded at HKICPA Qualification Programme Case Competition in November 2016.

The annual ACCA Hong Kong Business Competition equips accounting and business students with the accounting, business analysis and communication skills employers demand. Over 10,000 students have participated since its launch in 2007. The competition mixes business knowledge with social responsibility, and for the fourth consecutive year, social enterprise experts drawn from SEBC have advised and judged. This learning experience not only polishes students’ business analytical, proposal writing, communication and presentation skills, but also benefits the students well beyond the competition.
