CUHK Centre for Global Family Business launches philanthropy advisory series

CUHK Business School Centre for Global Family Business (CGFB) has launched “Enhancing Philanthropy Advisory Capabilities for Professional Services in Hong Kong,” a four-part seminar series exploring the evolving role of professional advisers in philanthropy and family wealth. Funded by the Government’s Professional Services Advancement Support Scheme (PASS), the series will culminate in a conference on 16 January 2027.

The opening seminar, “Beyond Borders: Philanthropy, Impact & Expertise” was held on August 25 and drew a full house of 150 participants from family offices, wealth management, professional services, philanthropy, academia and the social innovation sector.

The seminar was organised in collaboration with CPA Australia and The Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS), with support from the Hong Kong Academy for Wealth Legacy (HKAWL). Additional partners, including The Law Society of Hong Kong and The Society of Chinese Accountants and Auditors, will join the subsequent seminars.

From Wealth Preservation to Purpose

As intergenerational wealth transfer reshapes expectations across Asia, the seminar centred on one question: beyond compliance and wealth preservation, what is wealth for?

Three themes emerged: First, families increasingly want their wealth to reflect their purpose and values. Second, philanthropy has shifted from episodic giving to a matter of governance, legacy and values. Third, advisers who can address purpose alongside compliance are better positioned to provide more holistic support to families.

The seminar featured Ms Karina Wong, Divisional Councillor and Co-Chair of the Taxation Committee of CPA Australia (Greater China Division), and Greater China Private Tax Co-Leader and Greater China Family Enterprise Leader, EY; Mr Anthony Gao, Executive Director for Hong Kong and Regional Partnerships, The Nature Conservancy; and the representative from Glory Family Heritage of Noah Holdings Limited. They addressed Hong Kong’s policy and tax landscape, the evolving needs of global high-net-worth Chinese families, and the role of advisors in building impact-driven partnerships.

The panel that followed examined how legal, accounting, tax, trust and wealth management professionals can move beyond compliance-focused services.

The remaining seminars will be held on 23 September, 15 October and 26 November 2026, culminating in the concluding conference on 16 January 2027.
