The Hong Kong Observation Wheel – A New Landmark at the Central Waterfront

The Hong Kong Observation Wheel was recently opened along the Central harbour front. In an interview with Sing Tao Daily News, Simon Lee says the construction cost of a Ferris wheel is not huge, that such a structure can be easily accepted as part of a city’s skyline and could become the city’s new icon.

There has been a wave of observation wheel constructions in metropolis around the world in recent years. The New York Wheel and the Dubai Eye are set to open soon. The Hong Kong Observation Wheel, Hong Kong’s long-awaited harbour-front Ferris wheel, was opened to the public on 5 December, 2014.

Commenting on the new landmark in an interview with Sing Tao Daily News, Simon Lee, Senior Lecturer of School of Accountancy and Co-director of Integrated BBA Programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong Business School, says the construction cost of a Ferris wheel is not huge and it does not take a long time to build. An observation wheel is easily accepted as part of a city’s skyline and could become a new icon for a city. Riding on the wheel allows family members, friends, couples and tourists to enjoy the panoramic scenery of a city in a leisurely manner, as it provides a comparatively better experience than that of an observation deck in a high-rise building.
