On 27 April, the BBA Alumni Association organised a seminar, titled ‘Yellow Emperor Inner Canon’, for alumni and friends at the MBA Town Centre. The seminar was part of the “Traditional Chinese Scholarship as Today’s Reference Talk Series” launched earlier this year.

The ‘Yellow Emperor Inner Canon’ is an ancient text that has served as the fundamental doctrinal source for Chinese medicine for over two millennia. Its earliest mention appears in the bibliographical chapter of the Hanshu and it consists of two texts, each comprising eighty-one chapters or treatises in a question-and-answer format between the mythical Yellow Emperor and six of his legendary ministers. The first text, the Suwen, also known as Basic Questions, covers the theoretical foundation of Chinese medicine and its diagnostic methods. The second and generally less referred-to text, the Lingshu, explores acupuncture therapy in great detail.

The seminar featured Dr. Chan Ka Chung as the guest speaker. A BBA alumnus, Dr. Chan earned a PhD from Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine and is a registered Chinese medicine practitioner. During his talk, Dr. Chan shared his study on the ‘Yellow Emperor Inner Canon’, focusing on lifestyle regimen, medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion. He also referenced the principles of yin and yang to explain the significance in striking a balance between the laws of natural forces. The alumni showed intense interest and greatly enjoyed the talk, gaining insight and knowledge on this classical Chinese monograph, inspiring them to observe and take care of their health.

Mr. Raymond Lo, BBA Alumni Association President, was pleased with the positive feedback. “We hope that the seminar will bring attention to the medical achievements of our ancestors and draw awareness to important works from classical Chinese literature, with a focus on Chinese medicine. We will spare no effort in organising more useful and stimulating talks to enrich the minds and broaden the horizons of our alumni.”
