CUHK Business School students crowned world champions in Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge

Students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School won the championship in the 2025 Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge, the world’s largest university-level virtual investing competition.

The winning team, “Bear Bull”, an all-woman team from CUHK Business School, outperformed more than 11,000 students from 2,600 teams representing 396 universities across 50 countries. Competing against peers from leading institutions around the world, the team achieved an exceptional return of more than 400 per cent, growing its virtual portfolio from US$1 million to approximately US$4.1 million.

Guided by Professor Haynes Yung Hei-ming, the team was led by captain Shierina Sayogo (QFIN, Year 2), with members Gracia Aubrey Perdana (GLEF, Year 1), Marvelia Claresa Tjen (IBBA, Year 1), and Cherish Anastasia Nicolaus (IBBA, Year 1). Over the five-week competition, the students implemented an effective portfolio management strategy across global equity markets, making use of the Bloomberg Terminal to analyse data, manage risk, and execute trades in real time. Discipline and prudence were key to the success.

Reflecting on the experience, Shierina Sayogo said, “Winning the 2025 Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge as global champion was an unforgettable experience for our team. Over five weeks, we executed an active, disciplined strategy with daily portfolio monitoring and risk management across global equity markets. The Challenge strengthened our analytical skills and reinforced how real-world market experience can shape our academic focus and future careers in finance.”

Professor Yung praised the team’s performance and highlighted the educational value of the Challenge, saying, “The Bear Bull team demonstrated exemplary discipline in applying sophisticated business and finance knowledge, skillfully augmented by timely, high-quality insights drawn from Bloomberg’s comprehensive data ecosystem—securing a distinct competitive edge. The Challenge naturally complements and extends CUHK Business School’s finance curriculum, elegantly bridging rigorous academic theory with the realities of collaborative decision-making and live-market strategy execution.”

CUHK Business School remains committed to offering experiential learning opportunities that equip students with practical skills, global perspectives, and the ability to navigate complex financial markets.
