On 10 January 2016, a group of 7 Global Accounting Stream (GA) students from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School participated in the 18th Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Community Day at Chater Road Sunday Pedestrian Zone in Central. All the participating students had a great time in the exciting rickshaw race which helped to raise money for charity.

The teachers of Professional Accountancy Programme (PACC) not only showed their support to the CUHK Business School team by sponsorship but also by action. Dr. Shirley Kan, PACC Programme Director and Mr. Eric Leung, Lecturer at the School of Accountancy joined the cheering team to encourage the participating GA students.

This year’s ACCA Community Day raised over HK$1.2 million, with donations going to Enlighten – Action for Epilepsy, Harmony House, and Jubilee Ministries. The charitable activity attracted over 800 participants from different universities, accountancy firms, multi-national companies, corporations and institutions. Since 1997, the ACCA Charitable Foundation Limited has raised a total of over HK$15 million through its signature annual event and helped many charitable organisations to support people in need over past years.

The GA stream started in the 2012/13 academic year with outstanding students from the PACC programme in the CUHK Business School. Upon completion of their year-one studies within the four-year PACC programme, students can choose to study under the GA stream. This programme is designed to nurture students with strong international exposure and aims to enable them to deal with accounting issues in the increasingly complex and inter-connected business world. These high flyers will be trained to acquire a global mindset with knowledge in international accounting issues, and take up leadership roles in the international accounting and business community.

This unique programme is the first of its kind in Hong Kong and is backed by CUHK Business School alumni, international accounting firms – BDO, Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC, as well as corporate and financial advisory services firms, which have pledged support in the form of scholarships to allow outstanding students of the GA stream to take a two-week study trip to Oxford and London in the UK. During the trip, the students will have the opportunity to gain international training experience. In addition, they will also be offered summer internship placements at the Big Four accounting firms in China, where they can gain valuable practical work experience outside Hong Kong.
