Economic Contribution of Aviation to Hong Kong Economy

The purpose of the study is to measure the direct, indirect and also the induced effects of aviation sector to Hong Kong economy. Aviation contributes directly to the public through its services, and indirectly through its support to other sectors which use its services. Value added is used to measure the direct benefit generated from air transport and its related sectors, and also the indirect benefits generated from tourism and trade services sector.

Apart from using value added, a broader coverage of the benefits brought by aviation sector can also be computed using input-output table.

Air transport itself not only generates income and job opportunities to the economy, it indirectly boosts its supporting industries. These two parts of benefits are termed as the total effect. The income it generates will also induce more consumption and investment, which allow other sectors to benefit from the aviation sector. This gives rise to the induced effect of aviation industry. The use of input-output analysis can effectively capture these effects, and allow us to have better measure of the economic contribution of the aviation sector to Hong Kong economy.
