Improving Corporate Governance: Lessons from China and Hong Kong
Corporate governance has been getting more attention in China as the country takes a more prominent stage in the global economy. How can Chinese authorities regulate the listed State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) that are usually seen as less disciplined than non-SOEs? From his research, Prof. Xie Jin discovers an alternative governance mechanism based on the fear of reputational sanctions among these Chinese firms.
Being a financial hub and international city, how is Hong Kong compared to other major cities in terms of corporate governance in the recent study? What areas does Hong Kong need to improve on? Mr. K.M. Wong will share his insights on the current issues related to corporate governance and suggest what lessons we can learn from them.

Prof. Xie Jin is an Assistant Professor at the School of Accountancy in The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School. His research interests include Financial Accounting and Capital Markets, Security Regulation, Law and Economics, Macroeconomics and Monetary Policy, International Trade, Political Economy, Corporate Finance and Chinese Economy. His recent research “Punish One, Teach A Hundred: The Sobering Effect of Punishment on the Unpunished” won the Best Paper Award in the China Financial Research Conference (CFRC), 2018. His works have been presented at major international conferences such as the American Finance Association, SFS Cavalcade North America, China International Conference in Finance, and the London Business School Accounting Symposium.
