MSc in Actuarial Science and Insurance Analytics Sample Class Series: 2nd Class

CUHK Business School is now accepting applications for its new Master of Science in Actuarial Science and Insurance Analytics (MSc in ASI) degree programme — the first-of-its kind in Hong Kong.

The MSc in ASI programme helps students develop adaptable skills for various actuarial or analytical roles in insurance companies, banks, consulting and accounting firms, financial institutions, InsurTech startups and regulatory bodies.

Our programme is glad to launch the ASI sample class series to help prospective students learn about the actuarial field. We will invite four faculty members with extensive teaching experience in actuarial science and insurance to share the trendiest topics in the industry.

  Abstract:
  Contemporary insurance products involve complex benefit structures and cannot be modeled by a simple survival model. For example, benefits of a long-term health insurance depend not only on survival of the insured, but also on the health status of the insured. Benefits of a family coverage depend on the states of multiple lives. The class of Markov chain models is a powerful tool in actuarial modeling that is easy to understand and is computationally convenient.

  In this sample class we consider the class of Markov chain models. We will look at a few real-life examples and discuss some basic calculations in the simplest discrete-time setting with the help of spreadsheet program.
