Organized by South China Morning Post‘s Classified Post, the first HR Conference 2017 was held on 29 March 2017 with the theme “Compensation and Benefits: Redefining HR Thinking”. The conference drew over 200 human resources (HR) professionals, talent strategists and business leaders to hear from a range of expert speakers who shared their views on the latest developments in compensation and benefits (C&B) strategies.

S. Noorein Inamdar, Associate Professor of Practice in Management of Department of Management at The Chinese University of Hong Kong Business School was invited to deliver a keynote speech at the conference.

The theme of Prof. Inamdar’s speech was entitled “The Use of C&B to Motivate Employees across Cultures”. In her speech, she said that the onset of globalization has resulted in companies expanding into new markets and “sending people all over the world with minimal multicultural training.”

With research showing 70 percent of international ventures failing, purely for cultural reasons, Prof. Inamdar emphasized that a greater use of cultural understanding was vital to increase motivation and that HR had a key part to play.

“The HR role is pivotal in figuring out how to engage people across cultures so they can get along, that they can actually work together in a way that creates substantial value,” said Prof. Inamdar.
