MBA Blog: Defining My Plan B

In her second blog published in the Financial Times, current MBA student Monica Dee admits that although she is hoping for a career shift through pursuing an MBA, she needs to be practical in the fiercely competitive Hong Kong job market by having a Plan B for her career.

In her second blog article for the Financial Times, current MBA student Monica Dee writes about working on a Plan B for her future career in the banking industry.

Prior to enrolling in the MBA programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong Business School, Dee had worked in the middle office in the banking industry for four and a half years. She wanted to make some big changes in her career by pursuing an MBA degree. In the beginning of her studies, her No. 1 priority was to pursue a front office position in the banking industry after graduation. This is the career shift she has been longing for.

Dee recently joined a business challenge workshop as part of a recruitment exercise by one of the largest banking institutions in the world. The workshop made her realize that she was not working on a Plan B when she should have been, given the extremely stiff competition for an executive management position in Hong Kong’s banking industry.

Dee has decided that her Plan B would be to keep an open mind to middle management positions as well, as it is the practical thing to do since she already has the potential to deliver immediate results with her extensive experience in her field. It is also about understanding circumstances beyond her control, such as job market conditions.

Dee fears that at this point, starting Plan B only if Plan A fails might already be too late and doing so might squander away a lot of precious time. But still, she will dream big and reach for the stars with Plan A, and at the same time be practical by having a Plan B… Read More (PDF)
