Business Students Learn the Importance of “Giving Back” During Shaoguan Service Trip

During the 5-day service trip to Shaoguan, business students gained valuable knowledge and insights into the development of China’s manufacturing industry in the Southeast regions, reflected on their personal values from the service teaching at a local elementary school, and enjoyed exchanging ideas with local students at Shaoguan University.

A group of business undergraduates went on a 5-day service trip to Shaoguan from December 2 to 6, 2016. Led by Mr. Simon Lee, Assistant Dean (Undergraduate Studies) of CUHK Business School, students gained valuable knowledge and insights into the development of China’s manufacturing industry in the Southeast regions, reflected on their personal values from the service teaching at a local elementary school, and enjoyed exchanging ideas with local students at Shaoguan University.

Organised by the Undergraduate Office, the trip aims to develop a sense of social responsibility amongst Business students. One of the highlighted activities was the firm visit to Shaoguan Steel and Iron Co. Ltd, where students learned how the organisation incorporates the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility in their strategic plans by providing employment to the local population, and by minimising the impacts on the environment. Students also learned how the company positions themselves as a major player in the global market, and were given a guided tour around the steel production factory floor.

Another highlight of the trip was the volunteer teaching at a local school, Heping Road Elementary School. In three teaching teams, students designed a range of engaging activities in class, utilising their knowledge, applying their coordination and presentation skills, and encouraging audience engagement.

“The volunteer teaching experience is the most memorable activity to me – I have always wanted to join a meaningful cause to ‘give back’ to the community,” said Peter Chan (Integrated BBA, Year 5), “I certainly hope we have given the young students something new and meaningful to broaden their horizons.”
