CUHK Business School Students Receive Top Awards at Six Case Competitions in Three Countries

CUHK Business School students received top awards from six case competitions in China, Denmark and the U.S.

Recently, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School students received top awards from six case competitions in three countries:

  • EY’s Young Tax Professional of The Year 2017 (Hong Kong, China)
  • 2017 KPMG National Business Case Competition (Hong Kong, China)
  • KPMG Business Administration Paper 2016 (Xiamen, China)
  • Copenhagen Business School Case Competition (Copenhagen, Denmark)
  • Texas Undergraduate Stock Pitch Competition (Texas, U.S.)
  • Mock Case Competition (Texas, U.S.)

1. EY’s Young Tax Professional of The Year 2017

Cecilia Wong Sze-nga (Professional Accountancy [PACC], Year 4) won the 1st Runner-up award at the local competition of EY’s Young Tax Professional of The Year 2017 on 3 March, 2017. Together with the champion, she will represent Hong Kong to compete with representatives from mainland China and Taiwan at the national tax competition in Beijing.

In the local competition, participants first complete a 90-minute quiz comprising multiple-choice questions and then a short essay question at the semi-final stage. Finalists participate in a case study which is intended to test their reasoning and expressive abilities. Shortlisted finalists are then invited to do an individual presentation to a panel of judges. The first two prize winners win a cash award, an internship/conditional offer of employment with EY’s Tax Department in Hong Kong and also an opportunity to compete with representatives from mainland China and Taiwan at the national competition on 1 April.

EY’s Young Tax Professional of the Year is an international competition designed to identify young talent with an interest in tax, helping them to enhance their professional skills and to develop their careers. The competition gives participants the opportunity to share experiences with people from a range of backgrounds and cultures. By bringing together students from all over the world, the event aims to demonstrate the extent to which the tax profession has changed today and how business is managed in different cultures. The competition will also expose participants to the skills required for tomorrow’s leaders.

2. 2017 KPMG National Business Case Competition

CUHK Business School won the KPMG National Business Case Competition for the third straight year. Harry Cheng (PACC, Year 3), Ho Ching-him (Asian Business Studies [ABS], Year 4), Lam Wai-yee (Integrated BBA [IBBA], Year 3), and Marco Po (Global Business Studies [GBS], Year 2) brought home the title on March 7, 2017. The winning team will represent KPMG China in the upcoming KPMG International Case Competition in Lisbon, Portugal this April.

Designed based on international tournament rules, the KPMG Cup requires student participants to analyse a business case within three hours and generate a formal report to provide solutions and conduct live presentations and a defence. The competition aims to test participating teams’ capabilities in business case analysis, teamwork and communication skills.

Hosted by Xiamen University and title-sponsored by KPMG, the KPMG Cup is an annual invitational business case competition that brings together undergraduates of 10 elite universities from Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan. The universities include Fudan University, Nanjing University, Nankai University, National Chengchi University, Peking University, Sun Yat-sen University, Tsinghua University, Xiamen University and Zhejiang University.

3. KPMG Business Administration Paper 2016

Three teams of CUHK Business School students swept the top three awards and Best Presentation at the KPMG Business Administration Paper 2016 competition on 5 February, 2017. The students were awarded cash prizes, trophies and internship opportunities at KPMG (for non-final year students).

The competition was themed “The Digital Entrepreneur” and attracted over 300 local and global entrants. Participating teams were required to come up with a detailed business plan for a start-up company incorporating digital technology. In the final round, they were required to do an oral presentation to the panel of judges including Academic and Business Evaluation Committees. Proposals were examined over four areas: originality and creativity, feasibility, effectiveness and profitability.

With more than 30 years of history, the Business Administration Paper is one of the oldest international business plan writing competitions. Organised by Hong Kong Federation of Business Students, the competition aims at fostering the interflow of ideas between the academic and business fields, ultimately enhancing participants’ knowledge of the real business environment. By taking students to a larger arena compared with standard classroom projects, students are propelled to think, learn and inspire on a much larger scale.

4. Copenhagen Business School (CBS) Case Competition

Benjamin Chan (Quantitative Finance [QFIN], Year 3), Yody Chiu (GBS, Year 3), Pascal Kedves (IBBA, Year 3), Nicholas Lam (GBS, Year 4) were awarded runner-up at the CBS Case Competition. The competition took place from 25 February to 4 March at Copenhagen Business School in Denmark.

In the preliminary rounds, each team presented their solution to a panel of judges. The judges selected one team from each of the three pools to qualify for the Grand Finale – and their analytical skills and presentation abilities were put to the test in front of 12 prominent jury members and the audience. Following final round presentations, the panel of judges selected the winner of CBS Case Competition.

CBS Case Competition is an international business school competition where 12 teams are invited to solve a real-life business challenge. This closed division of CBS Case Competition is only for invited teams representing business schools around the world. The case competition is organised entirely by students and financed by prominent corporate partners.

5,6. Texas Undergraduate Stock Pitch Competition and Mock Case Competition

Marco Wai (PACC, Year 3) earned awards at the Texas Undergraduate Stock Pitch Competition and Mock Case Competition during his exchange at University of Texas, Austin (UT Austin).

Together with three other exchange students, Wai won the 1st-runner up at the Texas Undergraduate Stock Pitch Competition held during 10-18 February. The competition was organised by the Asian Business Students Association (ABSA) and University Finance Association (UFA) at McCombs School of Business of UT Austin. It aims to provide undergraduate students the opportunity to learn the various aspects of financial stock markets and build communication as well as analytical skills.

Wai with another exchange student also won the Champion in the Mock Case Competition on 24-25 February. Organised by the ABSA & Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA) at McCombs School of Business of UT Austin, the competition is designed to provide participants with hands-on experience to tackle a business case in a limited time and receive valuable feedback from judges.
