CUHK Business School Professor Johnny Li delivered an inaugural lecture on the actuarial science of extended retirement

Professor Johnny Li, the Tan Bingzhao Professor of Actuarial Science of the Department of Finance at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School, delivered his inaugural lecture on Monday, 15 July 2024.

In his inaugural lecture titled “Landing Safely in Extended Retirement: An Actuarial Researcher’s Perspective”, Professor Li highlighted the potential financial risks arising from increasing global life expectancies and provided the audience with an overview of a range of financial products, such as advanced-delayed life annuities and reverse mortgages. He also took the opportunity to express gratitude to his mentors, university management, and family for their unwavering support throughout his academic journey.

The Tan Bingzhao Professorship was established through a generous endowment fund from Mr Tan Bingzhao, Honorary Chairman of Nimble Holdings and alumnus of the School’s EMBA (Chinese) Programme. This endowment aims to support the incumbent professor’s research activities and enhance CUHK’s research capacity.

In his vote of thanks, Professor Rocky Tuan, CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President, expressed deep gratitude to Mr Tan and stated, “Mr Tan’s continuous contribution to CUHK is testament to the steadfast support of our alumni community. Mr Tan’s generosity is instrumental in encouraging fellow alumni to give back to their alma mater, and their collective support is key to driving CUHK’s pursuit of excellence in teaching and research, and building a better future for the next generation.”

Professor Shu Tao, acting dean of CUHK Business School, remarked that Mr Tan’s benevolence has inspired the School to strive relentlessly for higher achievements in teaching and research. He also commended Professor Li for his outstanding accomplishments and invaluable contributions to actuarial science and said, “Professor Li brings a wealth of experience and exceptional insights from both the academia and industry. He is undoubtedly a driving force for the financial education and research for CUHK. I am confident that he will continue to nurture outstanding talent and make significant contributions to the development of the actuarial insurance industry in Hong Kong, our nation, and globally.”
