The Declining Craze for Studying at Hong Kong Universities

Commenting on the declining number of applications for Hong Kong universities by mainland Chinese students, the Dean says in an interview with The Paper that Hong Kong remains as a gateway to China where East meets West, and the city is safe

According to statistics from two universities in Hong Kong, the number of mainland Chinese students admitted to both has continued to increase in the 2015 academic year but the number of mainland applicants has dropped sharply. This indicates that the craze for studying at Hong Kong universities is dying down.

Commenting on this phenomenon in an interview with the Shanghai-based The Paper《澎湃新聞》, an emerging online media owned by Oriental Morning Post《東方早報》, Prof. Kalok Chan, Dean of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School and Wei Lun Professor of Finance, admits that the number of applications from mainland Chinese students has declined in the past two years. Despite this, Dean Chan adds that Hong Kong is a safe place and the city’s economy has not undergone a recession even though its economic growth rate has fallen behind the mainland.

Prof. Chan emphasises that Hong Kong remains an East-Meets-West gateway to China.
