Seven CUHK Business School Teams Earn Awards in Three International and Local Case Competitions

Our student teams earned various awards in World Asian Business Case Competition, IIBD International Case Competition and Hong Kong Undergraduate Financial Planners of the Year Award 2016.

Recently, seven CUHK Business School student teams earned various awards in three competitions, namely World Asian Business Case Competition, IIBD International Case Competition and Hong Kong Undergraduate Financial Planners of the Year Award.


1. 2016 World Asian Business Case Competition

Organised by Academy of Asian Business (AAB) and Sungkyunkwan University, the competition themed “How Asian Brands Soar” took place on August 12-13, 2016 in Seoul, Korea. Two teams from CUHK Business School won the 2nd best winner and Top 10 Winner in the competition. Dr. Joyce Linghua Wang, a lecturer at the School of Accountancy of CUHK Business School also received the Best Advisor Award for the outstanding advice for her students.

All the top 10 winning teams received the AAB Global Scholarship Award package. The package is designed to provide the winners with enriching and exciting experiences in Asia, in addition to their research and learning experience. The winners were invited to visit their dream companies and travel to Seoul.The team winning the 2nd place was also awarded a financial scholarship of USD1,000.

The World Asian Business Case Competition is an annual case competition that invites university/college students to write up and present an Asian business case on how it became successful. It provides an opportunity for the participants to not only learn from the case they choose, but also have a wonderful experience of winning the competition. Participants gain valuable opportunities to develop mentorships with business leaders and to build network and friendship with other global fellow participants for their future careers and businesses.


2. 2016 IIBD International Case Competition

This year, the 2016 IIBD International Case Competition is jointly organised by Windesheim University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands and Hong Kong Baptist University. A team of CUHK Business School students from the global programs won Silver Award with 400 euros in the Competition on November 18, 2016.

In this edition of the competition, student teams from 18 universities in 9 countries submitted their case analysis in the first round. After two rounds of review by a panel of 12 assessors, 6 teams were selected to enter the final round.The finalist teams were invited to Windesheim University of Applied Sciences to compete for awards in the Competition.

The IIBD International Case Competition aims to strengthen internationalisation through the enhancement of student and faculty networks, both social as well as professional. The Competition highlights the strategic challenges and managerial dilemmas faced by global business leaders. Students have to apply their creativity and problem-solving skills to solve a real world business problem, to formulate workable and action-oriented recommendations.

3. Hong Kong Undergraduate Financial Planners of the Year Award 2016

In the Hong Kong Undergraduate Financial Planners of the Year Award 2016, four teams that comprised CUHK Business School students won the Champion, 3rd Runner-up, Certificates of Merit and Certificates of Excellent Presentation during October and November 2016. The Champion team and 3rd Runner-up team received cash prizes of HKD5,000 and HKD2,000 respectively.

Organised by the Society of Registered Financial Planners, the competition consists of three rounds. Participating teams first submitted a financial proposal and written report on a real-life financial planning case. 12 teams were then selected out of the 70 cases to advance to the next round, in which each team submitted a video presentation alongside with their presentation slides on the case. In the final round, each team presented their arguments on “In creating financial plans, how and why should financial planners account for the risks and opportunities associated with the US Presidential Election of 2016?” to a judging panel of experts and veterans from the financial community.

The competition aims to raise the awareness of financial planning among students and to equip them with adequate preparation for a career in the financial planning industry. In 2016, over 200 students from regional universities have entered into the Award competition and responses have been overwhelming. The competition is open to all full-time undergraduate students studying in the universities in Hong Kong and Macau.
