“Impactful IS Research in the Digital Era”
About the Workshop
JUSWIS is an annual summer workshop jointly organised by the IS groups at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the University of Hong Kong (HKU), and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). All participating universities take turns hosting the event on an annual basis. The theme of this year’s workshop is: “Impactful IS Research in the Digital Era”.

The 2025 JUSWIS will be held at the Cheng Yu Tung (CYT) Building of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. There are multiple rooms adopted for the workshop.

Invited Guests

Dr Susan (Sue) Brown is the Stevie Eller Professor and Department Head of Management Information Systems at the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management. Her research focuses on individual motivations for and consequences of IT use, mediated interactions, diffusion of misinformation, and research methods. Dr Brown has published extensively in leading journals such as MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, and the Journal of the Association for Information Systems. She has served in editorial roles for several top journals and is currently the co-editor-in-chief of AIS Transactions on Replication Research. In 2024, she became the 14th Editor-in-Chief of MIS Quarterly. Her contributions to the field have been recognised with awards including the AIS Sandra Slaughter Service Award and the AIS Fellow Award.

Dr Miguel Godinho de Matos is a Full Professor of Information Systems and Management and Dean of Faculty at Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics. His research explores the effects of digitisation on creative industries, social networks, peer influence in consumer behaviour, and responses to consumer privacy regulations. His work has been published in leading journals such as Management Science, MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, and the Journal of Management Information Systems. Dr Godinho de Matos has served as Associate Editor (2020–2023) and is currently a Senior Editor (since 2024) at MIS Quarterly, receiving the Outstanding Associate Editor award in 2022. He has also been recognised with early career awards from INFORMS and the Association for Information Systems.

Dr Anandasivam Gopal is the President’s Chair in Information Systems and Innovation at Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and Head of the Division of Information Technology and Operations Management. His research centres on technology platforms, contracting, digital entrepreneurship, and the economics of innovation, with empirical studies in settings such as mobile ecosystems, healthcare IT, and secondary markets for technology products. His work often combines rigorous econometric analysis with rich field data to generate insights relevant to both academia and industry. His work is published in leading journals including MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, and Journal of Management Information Systems. He served as Senior Editor of Information Systems Research until December 2024 and has previously been Associate Editor at both ISR and MISQ.

Dr Jungpil Hahn is a Provost’s Chair Professor in the Department of Information Systems and Analytics at the National University of Singapore (NUS) School of Computing. He currently serves as Vice-Dean of Communications, Director of the NUS FinTech Lab, Deputy Director of AI Governance at AI Singapore, and Deputy Director of the Centre for Technology, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence & the Law. From 2015 to 2021, he was Head of the Department of Information Systems and Analytics. Dr Hahn’s research focuses on digital innovation, open innovation, organizational learning, software development, and human-computer interaction. His work has been published in leading journals such as MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Management Science, and Organization Science. He has served as Associate Editor of Information Systems Research and is currently a Senior Editor of MIS Quarterly.

Dr Elena Karahanna is the C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry Distinguished Chair of Business Administration and a UGA Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Management Information Systems at the Terry College of Business, University of Georgia. Her research explores the intersection of technology and organisational behaviour, focusing on areas such as AI, Health IT, conversational agents, social bots, algorithmic coordination, and IT use. She is particularly interested in how emerging technologies shape and are shaped by organisational practices and user behaviour. Dr Karahanna’s work has been published in leading journals, including MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, and Journal of Management Information Systems. She has served as Senior Editor at Information Systems Research and Associate Editor at Management Science.

Dr Suprateek Sarker is the Rolls-Royce Commonwealth Commerce Professor of Information Technology at the McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia. Dr Sarker’s research, primarily qualitative or mixed-methods, focuses on topics such as distributed work, digital transformation, and IT-enabled organisational change. His work has been published in leading journals including MIS Quarterly, Journal of Management Information Systems, and Information & Organization. He has held editorial roles across numerous top journals and has received multiple honours, including honorary doctorates from the University of Jyväskylä and Copenhagen Business School, as well as the AIS Fellow Award. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of Information Systems Research and is a past President of the Association for Information Systems (AIS).

Dr Heshan Sun is the Richard Van Horn Professor of IT and Analytics and a Professor of Management Information Systems at the University of Oklahoma’s Price College of Business. Dr Sun’s research focuses on the profound influence of information technology on individuals, organisations, and society, with specific interests in human-technology/AI interaction, business analytics, and online crowd behaviour. His work has been published in leading journals such as MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Decision Support Systems, International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, and Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. He is a Senior Editor at MIS Quarterly, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, and AIS Transactions on HCI.

Dr Jason Bennett Thatcher holds the Tandean Rustandy Esteemed Professorship in the Division of Organizational Leadership, Information, and Analytics at the Leeds School of Business, University of Colorado Boulder. He is also a Full Professor of Management Science at the Alliance Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, and an Honorary Professor at the University of Nottingham. Dr Thatcher’s research focuses on individual decision-making, strategic alignment, and workforce issues related to the effective use of information technology in organisations, with recent projects exploring cybersecurity, social media, and digital upper echelons. His work has been published in leading journals such as MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of Applied Psychology, and others. He serves as a Senior Editor for MIS Quarterly and has held editorial roles at Information Systems Research, Decision Sciences, and AIS Transactions on HCI.
