On 28 January CUHK MBA Programs organised the Human Resources Roundtable Luncheon Conference at Four Seasons Hotel in Singapore. The event was part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the MBA programs. The theme of the HR Conference was:

“Investing for The Future – Developing Next Gen Leaders”

20 MBA students attended the event along with 40 senior HR executives from multinational corporations including Facebook, IBM, MSD, Siemens, Nielsen and more. The conference provided an ideal opportunity for students to network with HR experts and to develop a deeper understanding of the Asian employment market. For the HR executives, it was an ideal platform to deepen their relationships with CUHK staff, learn more about the MBA programs and to discover new talents.

Prof. Michael Ferguson, Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) and Director of MBA Programs welcomed students and guests to the event. This was followed by a keynote presentation by Ms. Karen Cariss, CEO and Co-Founder of PageUp. Ms. Cariss shared her experience in working with the HR leaders to mitigate inhibitors to business growth and her role in employee engagement and retention.

During the luncheon, a discussion was held at each table on a HR related topic. The discussion, facilitated by one of the HR professionals, provided an excellent platform to discuss practical and strategic careers solutions. The MBA students could demonstrate their talents and capability through the interaction and gain more details about the working environment and career trends in Singapore and in Asia. Discussion topics included:

  • Transforming the workforce with new technologies for HR
  • How technology is changing behaviour at work?
  • Identifying and refining the right talent management tools
  • Does mentoring impact millennial employee retention?
  • Education and leadership for the future we want
  • Getting ready to hire the next generation of leaders
  • Employer branding’s position and importance in today’s competitive talent market

“The main theme of the conference revolved around HR practices and talent management for the new millennium. The highlight of the event for me was the rare opportunity to meet so many HR professionals from different industries in one place and understanding their views on office culture, workplace dynamics and hiring practices. Bonding over good food and having a topic of discussion to guide the conversation during the table discussion is a great way to get to know people and stay abreast with current industry practices.”
