Business School Alumnus Conferred Honorary Fellowship

The Chinese University of Hong Kong held its 16th Honorary Fellowship Conferment Ceremony on 22 May 2017 at the Lee Hysan Concert Hall. Business School alumnus Michael Wong Yick Kam (BBA in Finance 1977; MBA 1984) was among six distinguished individuals conferred an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of remarkable contributions to CUHK and the community.

Prof. Kalok Chan, Dean of CUHK Business School, offered his heartfelt congratulations. “We are proud of Michael’s achievements. He is indeed a dedicated alumnus and very deserving of this great honour.”

Grateful for the education he received at CUHK, Michael has contributed immensely to his alma mater. Over the years, he has generously donated to numerous scholarships and established the Michael Wong Fund. Additionally, he has participated in the Business School’s Undergraduate and MBA Elite Mentorship Programmes and presently sits on the New Asia College’s Board of Trustees.

For over 30 years, Michael held key positions at Sun Hung Kai Properties, beginning as an Executive Trainee and gradually working his way up through multiple promotions. Passionate and determined to succeed, he guided the company’s development, securing its reputation as one of Asia’s leading property businesses, acclaimed for its excellent management by top financial publications. In 2010, he retired from his post as Executive Director to dedicate more time to volunteering.

In 2005, Michael was made Chairman of the Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association, one of many important organisations he supports. This experience inspired him to lead the revitalisation of the first public housing block in Hong Kong, Mei Ho House, which is now a youth hostel and museum showcasing Shek Kip Mei’s public housing legacy from the 1950s to the 1970s. In June 2016, he was appointed Council Chairman of the Open University of Hong Kong by the HKSAR Government after eight years of faithful service to one of his most treasured causes, education.

“It has been my pleasure to be awarded this honorary fellowship, which means a lot to me. Life is not measured by its length, but by the way we spend it,” he said.
