Our MISSION is to conduct and promote high quality research, executive education, and service to the hospitality and real estate industries.
The Center for Hospitality and Real Estate Research (CHRER) was established under the , at the Business School of the Chinese University of Hong Kong back in late 1999. Since then we have formed a solid foundation in research, executive education and service of the hospitality and real estate.
CHRER serves as a base for generating cutting edge research projects in hospitality and real estate that directly benefit the related industries in Hong Kong and Asia-Pacific region. Our research members have published books for the business world and research papers in leading hospitality and business journals, which cover a wide range of disciplines including Hospitality & Tourism Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Information Systems, and Real Estate & Finance. We also conducted quite a lot of industry focus studies.
We organize and workshops that provide platforms to exchange knowledge and ideas among our members and world renowned scholars. For instance, we hosted a Wei Lun Lecture by Professor Michael D. Johnson, Dean of Cornell Hotel School. Mr. Shao Qiwei, Chairman of China National Tourism Administration and the Honorary Advisor of SHTM, delivered a speech on cooperation of tourism between Hong Kong and China. We organize a summer workshop on property markets joint with Hong Kong Monetary Authority.
CHRER offers a range of tailored to executives of the hospitality and real estate industries. For example, we collaborated with the Hong Kong Hotels Association and assembled scholars from Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Hong Kong University, as well as The Chinese University of Hong Kong, to feature an intensive Senior Executive Training Program. Moreover, we collaborated with the Hong Kong Pei Hua Education Foundation Limited and organized training programs for government officials and industry executives who play a key role in the development of the tourism industry in the Western part of China. We launched The China Hotel Management Senior Executive Program with Hotel Yummy Magazine of China as well. We also provided executive training for companies and organizations, such as Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, Hyatt International, Marriott International and Kerry Properties Limited.
We also hold conferences and forums where academics, partitioners, and policymakers are able to share top-notch academic and business knowledge, concepts, and thinking. CHRER jointly organized with the Cornell Hotel School a CU² Joint Conference in Hospitality and Tourism in Hong Kong. In addition, we assembled world renowned scholars in real estate and senior hospitality executives in Hong Kong to feature a Hotel Investment Forum.
CHRER serves government agencies, business corporations and professional organizations with our knowledge and expertise in hospitality and real estate disciplines.
Professor Kam-hon Lee, Founding Director of CHRER, served as an independent director of the Travel Industry Council to conduct a study on Review of the Operation and Regulatory Framework of Tourism Sector in Hong Kong. He also serves as one of the two educational institution members in the World Committee on Tourism Ethics under World Tourism Organization. Professor Eliza Tse, Director of SHTM, serves as the member of Tourism Strategy Group at the Hong Kong Tourism Commission to provide consultancy service on the development of Hong Kong Tourism, as well as the Chairperson for the Tourism and Hospitality Studies subject for 3-3-4 New Senior Secondary academic structure and curriculum for Hong Kong Education Bureau and Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority. Professor Yinggang Zhou, Director of CHRER, advises the Authority of Qianhai, Shenzhen on the idea of “Hong Kong-Qianhai Financial Shopping Paradise”.
We collaborated with Ngong Ping 360 Limited to review and gauge the interest of visitors and to increase the attractiveness of Lantau. Our members also deliver speeches in various committees and companies, such as World Committee on Tourism Ethics, Hilton Group and Hong Kong Disneyland, and express our views in various media, such as Hong Kong Economic Journal, Hong Kong Economic Times and RTHK Radio program.
