Having served Morgan Stanley for over 20 years, Vincent Chui (BBA 1985) has gone from overseeing the distribution of Asian (including Japanese) institutional equity products to heading the bank’s Asia-Pacific private banking business, witnessing the everyday vicissitudes of global financial markets.
Kelvin Chiu (MBA 2013) has acquired many lifelong skills and qualities from organised sports. It has been persistence, determination and a disposition to grow that have guided him through his career and life, whether it has been moving from Canada to Hong Kong, switching from the energy sector to finance, or taking on the role of leader.
A civil engineer by training, Derrick Pang (EMBA 2007) returned to Hong Kong after graduating from university to join his family’s construction company. He worked at construction sites and closely monitored every project placed under his charge, even helping to lay gravel on the railway tracks when duty called. As he worked his way up to CEO, he gradually gained the trust of the team. Now, he is leading Chun Wo, the storied construction and engineering company, in its transformation into Asia Allied Infrastructure Holdings Limited, all while driving the industry forward.
Hannah Boon (MiM 2022) is a staunch proponent of creating positive change through technology, innovation and cultural understanding. She entered Hong Kong as an international student not only to study business and technology, but also to develop the skills she needs to drive the change she seeks.
Aaron Lee (IBBA 2000) is not someone who follows a fixed career path. His preference for diverse experiences and respect for individuality have led to a career spanning multiple sectors — from apparel, food and beverage to real estate and transportation. He was named Group Chief Executive of the Jardine Restaurant Group in October 2021. His management philosophy has enabled him to lead his Asian teams in their continual innovation and foray into new spaces. “In this day and age, businesses can no longer rely solely on tried-and-proven methods. Agility, adaptability and solid execution have become increasingly important. Respect for individuality and empowerment will enable us to nurture diversity and go farther.”
Doctors’ careers are typically straightforward: Six years of medical school followed by specialist training, and then working in public hospitals or private practices until retirement. That is not the case for Dr. Justin Wu (EMBA Year 2), Associate Dean (Health Systems) of Faculty of Medicine; and Professor of Department of Medicine & Therapeutics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). His career began just like most students, but chance and circumstances, as well as his openness to change, led him down a different path and into a bigger world.
After graduating from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School, Albert Chiu (BBA 1987) kicked off his banking career in forex and treasury management in multinational banks. In 2000, he decided to join EFG Bank (a relatively new Swiss private bank then) to set up their Asian operations. While achieving success in the private wealth management industry, he also maintained a passion for football, even serving as a FIFA-accredited referee for a time. Through all these high-stake endeavours—whether it was managing tens of billions of dollars in investments or making thousands of decisions during a football game—Albert’s exceptional mental strength carried him through. It allowed him to keep his cool in stressful situations and consistently turn challenges into victories.
Many people’s impression of accounting work is that it is inherently repetitive and, more importantly, “all about the numbers”. Yet Loretta Fong (PACC 1993) has a different take on the entire matter: “Numbers are merely health indexes. What accountants truly need to do is to feel the pulse of a business by analysing its performance, diagnosing problems and prescribing treatment. It gives me great satisfaction to see businesses thrive operationally and financially as a result.”
