The Teaching Hotel Facility

The Teaching Hotel Facility is a crucial element in the overall plan of the University to establish a regional Center of Excellence in Hotel and Tourism Management. It is located on the University campus overlooking the scenic Tolo Harbour, and is conveniently adjacent to the University Station.

The Teaching Hotel Facility houses two major components: the teaching facilities and the hotel facilities. The teaching facilities include 10,000 square meters of world-class conference and teaching space comparable to that of the famous Cornell Hotel School. There are dedicated floors for hotel school training with state-of-the-art facilities including a Food Lab, Wine and Beverage Lab, Student-Run Cafe and six Hyatt-brand standard training rooms. The hotel facilities – the Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Shatin - has been in operation since February 2009, and is an international hotel comprising 567 guestrooms and suites. It provides full range of convention facilities as well as world class hotel and catering services.

The Teaching Hotel Facility enables students to link theory and practice and to engage in experiential learning, and provides a multidimensional, longitudinal and experimental setting for research and education. Students initially learn about the Hyatt-brand standard in the six specially designed training rooms, and then observe and work at the Hyatt Regency. Through their work experience, students learn about best industry practice and how normative theory is constructed for hospitality research. Students also gain extensive first-hand training by running and managing the Cafe in the teaching facility. The Teaching Hotel Facility affords students an experience that no internship can likely provide. The university celebrated the grand opening of the Teaching Hotel on January 4, 2011.
